Mission statement:
Therapeutic Spiral International is a private, self-funded training institute dedicated to experiential training, education and direct services for survivors of violence in the global community using the Therapeutic Spiral Model™.
TSI provides experiential training in using the Therapeutic Spiral Model™, a clinical system of experiential change for people who have experienced violence, no matter what the cause. Over the past 20 years, the trainers and team leaders working for TSI have worked with people effected by earthquakes, fires, accidents, chronic illness and other natural catastrophes of living, as well as people who have experienced the severe violence of terrorism, war, genocide, torture and imprisonment, displacement, physical, psychological, sexual, and spiritual abuse. TSI also works with people with addictions and eating disorders. Mental health professionals in over a dozen countries have found the state of the art experiential methods of the Therapeutic Spiral Model effective and efficient in treating the traumas they have experienced in their own communities. We may be able to help you in your community. Email us today at drkatetsi@mac.com
A primary function of TSI is building Action Trauma teams to heal the psychological effects of social and political trauma, natural disaster or illness on individuals, families, groups, and cultures in the global community. In the last 4 years, TSI has been involved in building teams following the terrorist attack on the Pentagon here in Virigina. We have also worked in Northern Ireland and South Africa to help resource post-violence communities that are the leaders in the peace process. TSI has ongoing training groups in London and Ottowa, Canada. We have crossed the language barrier to develop teams in Taiwan and mainland China. In the USA, TSI has on-going groups in Baltimore, MD, Boulder, CO, Portland ME and Richmond, VA. See our calendar for a training in safe experiential methods of change in your area.

The organization mobilizes teams to respond to requests for training and direct services for helping professionals, organizations, treatment centers and hospitals. As a registered charity, it also raises funds for ongoing work in under-served communities.
TSI was established in March 2000 as a private, self-funded training institute. Since then we have trained over 1000 students, presented to over 2000 professionals and worked with over 1200 participants in personal growth groups in the countries listed above. TSI trainers often present as keynote speakers at conferences, symposiums and other programs that make the link between recent research in neurobiology (van der Kolk, 1996) and the need for experiential methods as the treatment of choice for trauma survivors.
TSI is more than a training institute or direct service provider. We are a community of people, in many cases, people who have experienced violence, catatrophe and trauma, dedicated to providing service to other trauma survivors in the global community. We believe that we can, in fact, change the world, one person at a time and know that experiential methods are the best chance people have for safe, effective, and time efficient methods of change. Join our listserve, read the articles you can download from the internet, email us, come to a workshop, build a team. Let us know how we can help your community and TSI will do what it can.
TSI teams are made up of professionals from many fields and many countries, who are joined by people in training to learn the Therapeutic Spiral Model or build their own local Action Trauma Teams. While TSM was originally a clinical model of experiential psychotherapy practiced by physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, counselors and other therapists, we are now joined by professionals in the fields of education, humanities, political advocacy, and human rights in our community program, Action Against Trauma.
Our common thread being that we come together from different countries, backgrounds, cultures, races, training, and personal experiences to build teams to stop the cycle of violence in the global communities. We welcome you to connect with our TSI community through our listserve, our newsletter, and the people that are listed in our Contact Us section.
Here, you will meet the main trainers at Therapeutic Spiral International with photos and brief introductions. Learn more about our teams in the past and present newsletters. Check our What’s New section where we introduce another member of our TSI community to you.

Kate Hudgins, Ph.D, TEP
TSI Founder & Director of Training.
Kate Hudgins, Ph.D., TEP, is a clinical psychologist, board-certified psychodrama trainer, trainer, trained Gestalt therapist, and personal survivor of childhood violence and family addiction. Dr. Kate has worked with trauma survivors for more than 20 years, developing the Therapeutic Spiral Model(TM) with valued colleagues, students and people seeking to heal from the effects of violence. The three strands of the Therapeutic Spiral weave together Kate's personal experience with violence, her knowledge of safety as a clinical psychologist, and her belief in experiential methods to heal the symptoms of PTSD.
From 1990 to 2000, Dr. Hudgins ran The Center For Experiential Learning. In 2000, Kate founded the Therapeutic Spiral International charity in Charlottesville, Virginia, for which she currently acts as Training Director. In 2001 she received the Innovator's Award from the American Society for Group Psychotherapy and Psychodrama (ASGPP) in recognition of her work in developing the Therapeutic Spiral Model.

Mimi has been in practice as a social worker for over 20 years and in private practice for twelve. In addition to being a Trainer with TSI, she is also a member of the TSI Board. As a certified psychodramatist, she has witnessed the creation of the Therapeutic Spiral Model from the beginning. Part of her attraction to TSM is its sound clinical basis and establishment of safety through strengths. The use of competency-based models of treatment has been an integral part of her clinical practice and the prescribing of healthy roles is an especially important part of the TSM process to her.
In 2004, Mimi is teaching two modules on TSM and Addictions in Charlottesville, Va., Maine and Ottawa. As a recovering person of many years, she brings her personal experience to shape and direct the model to be safe for all stages of alcoholism and other addictions from intervention and stablization to family repair. Additionally, Mimi serves as the co-trainer with Dr. Kate in Canada and the United Kingdom and helped create the Action Against Trauma appliication to community practice.
